Danish research study calculates risk of retinal detachment following paediatric cataract surgery

Researchers based at the Department of Epidemiology Research at the Statens Serum Institut in Copenhagen have published the results of a study into the long term risk of retinal detachment (RD) following pediatric cataract surgery. The study collected information on children (aged 0 to 17 years) who had underwent pediatric surgery between 1977 and 2005. With almost 30 years of clinical data the researchers concluded that the estimated overall risk of RD within the initial 20 years after pediatric cataract surgery was 7%, but only 3% for isolated cataract.
